By the third night of the drought the wells of Halmere had gone to salt, and you were halfway up the north wall of the Tiller Palace with a stoneware jar of lamp oil clamped in your jaws, because nobody else in the kingdom had feet that could hold to glass.

The queen had sent for you at dusk. Her steward, a thin man who smelled of wax, said only that the palace clocks had stopped and the sentries were ready to fight the moon. You did not argue. Your grandmother had told you that the pale whorls across your back were a map of every spring under Halmere, drawn by a god who was bored and had a good hand with a brush, and that one day someone would read them properly.

At the thirty-second window your tail caught the drainpipe and coiled round it, tight and slow, the way a spiral holds when it has decided where it is going. Below, the courtyard lamps flickered, and you saw the pattern clearly for the first time: the curl at the base of your back opened onto the old cistern beneath the chapel floor, and the lines running from your left foreleg led straight to the orchard.

You poured the oil into the queen's own chimney, where it would burn for a single night, and then you climbed down to the cistern with the last of the jar. By dawn the water was rising through the flagstones in a thin silver spiral, turning like a tail, and the steward stood in it up to his ankles, weeping and laughing at once, unable to decide which of you deserved the credit.
