The stars over Hollin Wood went out the winter the miller's wife stopped leaving bread on the stile. Nobody in Sallow End remembered the custom properly, only that the forest had always been owed something at the edge of the fields, and that the sky was kept by whoever walked the boundary. So when the Maiden failed to rise above the beeches, Orla Penhallow took a lantern, a loaf wrapped in cloth and her grandfather's knife, and went in before the bell.

Under the oaks the ground was soft and the path kept turning back on itself. A fox sat on a fallen trunk and watched her with one eye. "You want the lights," it said, without much interest. "They are in the old well, where the water goes round and round and never comes out." She asked what it wanted. It wanted the knife, but she gave it the bread instead, and it laughed like a rusted hinge and led her down a slope to a ring of black water.
At the bottom the well was a whirl of silver. She saw the stars turning in it, slow and reluctant, each one caught on a curl of current. Unpicking them was no work for hands. She drew the long stroke of the boundary in the mud with the knife's tip, the upright tall and tapering, then the loop that carried the sky back across to the east, and last the curl where the water turned. The stars came loose one by one and climbed.
She walked home with the sky behind her and the fox trotting at her heel, and when she reached the stile the cloth was empty, though she had not eaten a crumb. Sallow End still keeps the boundary. Every autumn someone draws that same sign on the first stone of the wall, and the stars come up over the beeches as if they had never been away.
