Stylised letter tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with long, neon yellow almond-shaped nails reaches into a brown monogram canvas tote filled with US banknotes. A dark grey tattoo on the outer forearm shows a bold stylised letter with a sweeping flourish. The shot is warm-toned and close, with the bag and cash filling most of the frame.

Mrs Odile Penhallow had counted the bundles three times before the post came, and the tote on her hall table still smelled of the wet wharf at Liverpool. The seal on its strap was a single Z, pressed in red wax with her late brother's signet, and it was the only thing in the house she trusted.

Ambrose Tully came up the steps at half past four with a ledger under his arm and the face of a man who had not been paid in a month. He wanted the bag. The notes inside were American dollars, he said, owed to a shipping agent in Bristol, and the Z meant nothing without a clerk's countersignature. A woman with a stack of green paper and a seal like that, he added, was a rumour waiting for the Times to print it.
Odile let him finish. Then she tipped the tote onto the walnut and fanned the notes out like a hand of patience, every one a bold portrait and a faint grey sweep of ink in the corner. Her brother had always said a forger's flourish gave itself away. She laid the ledger open beside them and ran a finger down the column of signatures until it stopped on Ambrose's own. The Z was there too, looped at the top the way his hand always curled when he lied.
"The money was never yours to carry," she said, and rang for the constable.
He was gone before the bell finished, but the bag stayed on the table with its brass clasp open, and the seal, still warm, caught the lamplight like a wink.
