Small script tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person sits in a car holding a fan of banknotes in front of their face, so only the hair and hand are clearly visible. A small dark script tattoo sits on the inner forearm beside a gold wristwatch, and the lettering is too small and thin to read clearly. The image is a warm-toned photo with a grey crop top, a checked shirt tied at the waist and a dark car door in the background.

Nell had counted the same bundle of fifty-pound notes four times before the ferry horn sounded across Harwich harbour, and she knew she would count them a fifth time before the shutter came down. The kiosk smelled of hot dust and diesel. Outside, a car sat by the bollards with its engine off and its passenger door open, and nobody had got out for twenty minutes.

Her brother Tom had taught her to count at the kitchen table when they were small, flicking each note with a wet thumb the way their father used to. He wrote his lists in biro on the backs of his hands, small and slanting, so that by Sunday his skin was a map of errands. After the funeral she found the last of his writing in a shoebox: a deposit slip folded into eighths, with one line on the back. Don't let the watch go cheap, Nell. Keep the change.
The watch was a gold thing he had bought off a man in Ipswich and never once wound properly. She had carried it in her coat pocket for a year, feeling it tick against her hip like a second heartbeat she had not asked for. Now it lay on the counter between a roll of coins and a tin of mints, its face dull under the strip light.
The car door swung shut. Headlights came on, swept across the glass, and went away towards the town. Nell stacked the notes, slid them into the safe, and picked up the watch. She held it to her ear, felt the faint stubborn tremor of it, and turned the crown until the hands began to move.
