Stylised phoenix on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a stylised phoenix with a curled, scrolling tail sits on the upper back near the base of the neck. The linework is dark and bold, with tapering feathers and a spiral flourish. The tattoo is shown in black ink against pale skin, with a dark vignette around the edges of the photograph.

The frost had got into the well again, so Marta broke it with the back of the spade before the cows could be watered. Her grandfather used to say the ground in the high field remembered every hard year, and this one was harder than most. Old Jonas had sold the second mare in October and not told anyone why, and the dog had stopped coming in from the yard.

On the third morning of the cold, a bird sat on the gatepost where no bird had any business to be. It was dark-feathered and small, and its tail curled round on itself like a fiddlehead fern uncurling in reverse. Marta stood with the bucket and waited for it to fly. It did not fly. It only turned its head, the way a clerk looks up from a ledger, and said in a voice like a rusted hinge, "You have been carrying the wrong end of the bucket."
She set it down. The bird seemed satisfied. It told her about a spring under the north wall that had been sealed by a landowner's grandson sixty years ago, and how the water came up warm there, even in January, if you asked it properly and didn't kick the stones. Marta asked it properly. Her hands bled a little on the rocks, and then the stone gave, and steam rose off the pool like breath off a sleeping horse.
The bird was gone when she turned round, and the gatepost was only a gatepost. But the cows drank that winter, and the mare came home in spring from the neighbours, and Jonas, who had never once in his life thanked anybody, left a loaf on the step with a single feather tucked under the crust.
