The fair came to Holmfirth Common in the last week of December, when the frost made the ground ring like a bell. Old Ada Pryce kept the goat tent at the far end, past the candy floss and the swingboats, where a billy goat called Tobias stood on a painted plinth and climbed nothing at all.

Every night the crowd paid a penny to see him. The showman swore he had a fish's tail under the straw, which was a lie, but the children believed it. The travellers told a different tale: that the goat had once climbed the rigging of a sinking collier and hauled its crew up one by one, and when the sea came asking for its wages he gave it the curl of his own horns and kept his hooves on land.
One night a boy named Eli Marsh, son of the ferryman, came in soaked from the river with a coil of rope and a question. His father's boat was stuck fast in the mud where the ice had trapped it. Ada said the goat would go only if the boy climbed first, so he did, up the wooden rig to the top of the tent pole where the lantern hung, and the goat stepped up after him without a sound.
By morning the river ran clear and the boat floated free, its keel bright with frost. Nobody on the common could say where the goat had gone. Ada only swept the straw and said the sea always wants its due, and that those who climb for others come down with the tide in their hands. Eli kept the lantern hook on his bedroom wall for the rest of his life.
