Black cat and paw prints on a shoulder
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised black cat is shown in a stretched, arched pose with a curled tail, its face simplified to pointed ears and closed eyes. Above it sit a larger paw print and two smaller prints in solid black ink. The image is a close, slightly angled photo of a pale shoulder against a dark top and a plain wall.

The generator coughs itself awake behind the dodgems, and the cat is already sitting on the ticket hatch of the Waltzer before you have your coat off. Nobody at Ashby Mere remembers who brought her in. She simply turned up with the second season of rides, the year the big wheel lost a bolt and half the town came out to watch it sway. You call her Tuesday because that is the day she first stretched out of the cash tin, as if she had been napping in it since Easter and resented being disturbed.

Her stretch is the thing everyone talks about. Each morning she rises off the counter with her back bowed into a question mark and her tail curled at the tip like the crook of a showman's cane. She holds that shape until the first coins rattle down the chute, and her eyes stay shut the whole time, as if the diesel, the pop music and the shrieking from the Waltzer were a lullaby she has agreed to hear. Behind her, small damp prints lead across the tarmac, up the caravan steps and under the door marked Madame Orla, Fortunes, Palmistry, Dogs Welcome.
Last October the council sent its letter and the fair packed up in one long rush. Everyone was told to seal the caravans and be off the field by dusk. You went back for the float box and found Tuesday in the middle of the bare carousel floor, sitting among the stripped boards where the painted horses had been, paws set square as if she were waiting for a ride to start. She watched you cross the stage. Then she stretched, slowly, the way she always did, and padded off towards the gate, leaving prints in the dust for you to follow.
