Ornamental fox silhouette tattoo on the lower leg, filled with swirling linework that shifts from orange at the top to pink and red lower down.

Ornamental fox silhouette on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A fox seen from behind, sitting with its head and ears raised, forms a solid black silhouette outline. Its body and tail are filled with flowing scrolls, swirls and feather-like curves in fine black lines. The fill fades from orange and yellow at the top to pink and red across the tail, against bare skin with a plain indoor background.

Dear Maureen,

I did not believe you about the fox until last Tuesday, when I saw it from the balcony at ten to six. It was sitting on the flat roof of the bin store below us, the way a cat sits when it has decided the world can wait, ears up, back turned to the estate. The sun was going down behind Hartley Road and the light caught its coat so that the edges looked like the inside of a struck match. Orange at the shoulders, then red all down the brush of its tail. The middle of it was just dark, with the light coming through in curls.

Mr Okafor from flat 31 says it has been coming up the service stairs since the council painted the railings. He says it waits by the lift on the ninth floor and then walks off when the doors open, as if it has an appointment somewhere else. Nobody has lost a dog. Nobody has lost anything, except Mrs Dempsey, who swears her carnations were not dug up by a fox but by a man with a trowel, and I have told her I will not take sides in that.

I went down on Thursday with a tin of pilchards and put it on the step by the bins. The lift was broken again, so I took the stairs and was out of breath by the fourth landing, and when I came out the tin was empty and the fox was gone. Not a crumb left, not a single print in the dust on the step. Be well, and tell Dennis the boiler is fine now. I'll write again when the fox comes back.

Love, Iris
