Sugar skull girl with bottle on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon-style girl with blonde hair, a blue bow and sugar skull face paint rests her chin on her hand, with a key-like object and small bottle beside her. Bold outlines and smooth shading give the figure volume, and the purple puddle and blue bottle sit in the lower part of the design. Bright blues, purples, yellows and skin tones dominate, and the piece wraps across the outer upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the candle is short and I have only one more night of this story in me. Ines was the painter's girl in the village above the salt flats, and she could make a skull smile so well the dead came up to see who was laughing. Her hands were never clean. Every November she kept her paints on the windowsill and her tools in a tin that rattled like a bell.

The year the rains came early, the lake behind the chapel turned the colour of plums. Nobody would drink it and nobody would fish it. Ines went down with her brass key, the one that opened the chapel's old box of sugar moulds, and she saw a small blue bottle bobbing in the violet water. On its label was written a single word: Return. She knelt on the wet stones and tipped the bottle to her lips, and it tasted of burnt sugar and marigold and her mother's laugh, which she had not heard since spring.

When she climbed back up, her face had gone chalk-white, with the black rings round her eyes that the dead wear in the old paintings. Her mother cried and scrubbed at the paint, but it would not come off. Ines only shook her head and said the lake had asked for a fair exchange, and she had paid it with a smile.

That was the last of the purple water. The next morning the key was gone from her pocket and lying on the altar, warm, with the bottle beside it, empty. Ines painted her own skull that day, and then she painted the lake, so that anyone who looked too long into it would find someone waiting who knew their name. Now, blow out the candle.
