Crystal ball woman and roses on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman with a jewelled butterfly headpiece, turquoise lips and drop earrings holds a crystal ball in both hands, with necklaces draped across her chest. Two pink roses sit behind her head and another rose appears by her hand, with red splashes and small gems scattered around the design. Bold outlines, smooth shading and bright red, green, turquoise and pink ink fill the composition, which wraps over the upper arm and shoulder.

Dear Nell, The crystal came back to me this morning, rolled up in a tarpaulin with the Saltwick bills still stuck to it. Mr Pascoe says the lad from the cider tent took it for a joke and left it under the pier steps, which is what happens when you tell a boy he will marry a girl from the bakery. I have had it on the table since, turning it under the lamp, and the mist inside keeps settling into the same shape, a little bay with a dark line of roses along the shore.

You will remember the butterfly headpiece Father carved for me the summer we played the Pier Ballroom. The wings are chipped now and one of the jewels has gone, but I wear it anyway when I sit in the booth, because the customers trust a woman who looks like she has seen the far side of the water. Mrs Hollis came in on Tuesday wanting to know if her husband was coming home from Ostend. I told her the ball showed a pair of gloves on a windowsill and a rose going brown at the edges. She cried into her handkerchief and paid me double, and I felt like the worst fraud in Kent.
This evening I took the ball down to the sea wall and held it up to the last of the light. Something moved inside it, a small boat with its sail up, and beside it a figure with its hands cupped around something bright. I could not tell if it was me or you or somebody we have not met yet. I think I shall keep it on the sill, where the sun gets it first. Come down at Whitsun if the train fare allows, and bring that blue scarf you promised to return to me.
Your loving sister, Ida
