Sugar skull, treble clef and money rose sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm and shows a sugar skull at the top, a treble clef to the right, and the word Ambition in flowing script on a ribbon banner. Below the banner, a rose is built from folded banknotes, with smooth shading and fine linework throughout. The piece is shaded entirely in black and grey, with soft highlights on the rose petals and skin.

The officer at Vallejo Crossing wanted to know what was in the cello case, and I told him the truth, which was mostly spruce and a dead man's strings. He unzipped the lining anyway. Under the green baize lay a tin lid painted as a sugar skull, its grin chipped where the varnish had dried too fast, and beside it a rose folded from forty banknotes, each crease pressed flat with a thumbnail the way my uncle Teo taught me when I was nine.

Teo played double bass in the Sunday bands on the plaza and never once got paid in anything but cash. He used to say a note was only paper until somebody bent it into something worth keeping. The rose took him three winter evenings. He wrote AMBITION across a paper ribbon in his careful capitals, tore it up because the letters looked like a bank's, and wrote it again. The treble clef he drew in the margin of the ledger, so the last page of the book he left me looked more like music than accounts.
The officer turned the skull over in his gloves and asked whose it was. I said my uncle's, and that he had left it to me with the cello and a debt to a man in the next town. I had paid that debt in full, in fives and tens, folded small enough to fit inside the bass drum of the old kit.
He closed the case without a word and chalked a mark on the lid. Then he tapped the rose once, so lightly the petals barely moved. "Your uncle," he said, "was owed a lot of music."
I drove on with the window down, humming the only tune Teo ever finished, and I did not look at the rose again until the river was far behind me.
