Sugar skull design with ankh and hearts

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing of a stylised sugar skull, with a flower at the crown, leafy scrolls, an ankh at the centre of the forehead and a heart and diamond in the eye sockets. The skull has spiderweb panels on the temples, hatched shading along the jaw and cheekbones, and scrolling foliage across the lower face. The image is black and white with no colour and the composition is centred on a plain white background.

The cake is leaning again, and your aunt Rosario has already sent two people to hold it up with their hands. You stand by the trestle table with a tea towel over one shoulder and watch the bride's father try to read his speech off the back of a seed packet. Somebody has pinned paper marigolds to every chair, and the wind from the open doors keeps lifting them off like small orange birds that cannot make up their minds.

You were supposed to be the one who stayed sober and kept the speakers working. Instead you are holding a box of sugar flowers someone forgot to unwrap, and your cousin Ines is telling you the groom has lost the rings twice and found them in the same jacket both times. The ankh pendant she gave the bride for luck is hanging crooked on the photographer's lens cap. Nobody knows how it got there. Nobody wants to ask.

At the end of the evening, when the tables are stacked and the bunting sags over the bins, you find the groom's grandmother asleep in a folding chair with her shoes off. She wakes long enough to point at the cake, now tilted like a ship, and says the top tier will hold if you stop fussing with it. You stop. It holds. Outside, the last marigolds blow across the car park toward the river, and you let them go.
