Skull with roses and leaves line drawing
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of a human skull in three-quarter view, surrounded by rose blooms, leaves and curling vine tendrils. The linework is bold and even, with no shading, and the design sits on a plain white background. It is a flash-style design rather than a photograph of skin.

Nobody in Crake Hollow would cut the briars off the spoil heap that spring, not after the men shovelled a skull out of the wet ground below Hollin Drift. It was a small skull with a seam of coal still stuck between the teeth, and old Mrs Askew said it belonged to the lad who went down the wrong shaft in the year of the big water. She carried it home in a flour sack and set it on her windowsill.

The roses came up through the cracks in the sill that May, first one bloom, then a tangle of leaves that curled round the skull as if it were a pot. Vine tendrils crept out of the eye holes and the gap where the jaw had hung. The deputy came up the lane to tell her the roses had to go. He stood at the gate a long while looking at them, then walked back down without a word.
She kept the sill watered through the dry summer. When the owners sent men to sink a new shaft the following winter, the first thing they struck was a clean seam of coal, bright as wet slate, and the foreman swore the vines had shown him where to dig. Nobody argued with him, and nobody asked Mrs Askew for her skull back.
Every morning she still pinches the dead heads from its crown before the kettle boils, and the skull grins at the lane with its leaves about its ears.
