Sun and crescent moon with faces on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of a sun with long wavy and straight rays surrounds a crescent moon that has a face in profile, with a second smaller face on the sun's disc. The design is drawn in dark ink with fine hatching in the rays and along the edges of the disc. It is shown in black and grey on pale skin, centred on the upper back with the top of the shoulders and neck at the edges of the frame.

The moon came up off the starboard bow last night, thin as a paring knife, and Tobias swore blind it had winked at him. I told him he'd been at the rum. Still, I stood at the rail with the watch bell going and could see its face plain enough, turned sideways the way a churchwarden looks at a latecomer.

You'll laugh, but I've been keeping count. Every time we've been out of sight of land, the sun has risen with its face on, round and stern as a magistrate, and the moon has hung off its edge like a child hiding behind a skirt. Mr Okafor, the sailmaker, says it means we'll raise Valparaiso by Michaelmas. He also says the moon is a jilted woman who never shows her whole face in daylight, which I think is a sailor's way of saying he misses his own wife.
Dolan has been sketching them on the backs of the spare charts. He drew the sun with rays like the spokes of a cart wheel, some long and straight, some curling like smoke, and gave the moon a profile with its lip pushed out in disapproval. He means to send the drawing to his sister in Plymouth, though I told him she'll only pin it above the range and grease it to ruin.
When the sun dropped this evening and the moon hung there pale, both of them were up together for a minute or two, sharing the same bit of sky. I thought of you on the quay at Bristol with your shawl pulled tight. Keep the lamp lit on the step for me, and don't let the coal man short you again. Your loving husband, Edwin.
