Sun with face on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A sun with a human face and long wavy rays is drawn in black ink. The face has simple features, with eyes, a nose and a curved smile, and the rays spread outward in a symmetrical ring. The tattoo sits on the side of a bare torso, with blonde hair falling across the upper left of the frame and a black and white patterned fabric at the lower right.

Dell had been painting the same sun for eleven years on the side of the Pale Mesa Motor Court, and every spring the desert wind took a little more of it. The rays were easy. He could pull the long wavy spokes out of his wrist in his sleep, the way the sign-writers in Barstow had taught him. The face was the trouble. It kept coming out either sulky or surprised, and Ruth Okafor, who ran the place and held an unlit cigar between her teeth, said the sun looked like it had been insulted.

One morning in June a girl came up the highway on foot with a rolled canvas under one arm and asked if she could sit in his shade. She had a sketchbook full of faces. She said the trick was to draw the sun the way you'd draw someone you didn't want to wake, eyes half closed, mouth just starting to curve. Dell scoffed, then tried it, and the face on the wall stopped looking insulted and started looking like it had heard a joke it liked.
She left before noon with a sandwich and a promise to come back for the rest of the summer. She never did. But the following spring, when the wind came off the flats and stripped the paint from the upper rays, the sun kept its smile, and Dell noticed that every time he climbed the ladder to touch it up, he did it with his own eyes half shut.
