Black fine line tattoo of a sun with a human face and long wavy rays on the side of a ribcage, partly covered by a light blue top.

Sun with a face tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework tattoo of a sun with a calm face, drawn with eyes, nose and lips, surrounded by long, wavy rays. The lines are thin and the rays are lightly hatched, with no shading or colour. The sun sits centrally on the side of the ribs, with a pale blue garment pulled up over the upper part of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the bench, it has a wobble in it like my cousin's temper. Now, the sun you're looking at was not always a sun. In the old garden at Harrowgate Lane, where the rhubarb grew taller than the gardener's boys, the sun was a bored thing that hung over the wall and did nothing but bake the slugs.

Its face was pale as a plate, and it had grown tired of being looked at. Every morning it lifted its rays one by one, long and wavy like the hair of a woman wading out of the Ouse, and every evening it lowered them again, counting. The gardener, Mr Pell, a man with soil in his creases, swore it was the sun's mood that made his beans sulk.

One August the wall cracked during a storm, and a girl called Tansy Moss came through the gap with a sack of seed and a wet pencil behind her ear. She had been sent to fetch the marrows, and she found the sun lying in a bed of nettles, its rays tangled up like fishing line. She untangled them one at a time, humming, and the sun blinked up at her and said nothing at all, which is the courtesy the great ones pay.

Here is the turn. When she straightened, the sun had her eyes and she had its patience, and the rhubarb never grew taller again. Mr Pell kept the wall mended and the sun stayed up in its place, but the old people say that if you stand in that garden at noon and count the rays, you will find one more than you counted yesterday, and that is Tansy, still working.
