Sun and layered crescent moons on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A vertical column of three motifs: a sun with rays at the top, a crescent moon with ornate, lace-like detailing in the middle, and a larger crescent moon with similar patterning below. Thin connecting lines, a triangle outline and small arrowheads link the pieces. The tattoo is rendered in fine black linework with no shading, set against pale skin on the upper arm.

The ferry from the mainland had been cancelled twice, so Mairi walked the last miles to Kilda Strand with a sack of lamp oil on one shoulder and her father's brass compass in her coat. The lighthouse keeper's wife, Ishbel, met her at the gate and said the sun had gone down early that week and the moon had come up twice in a night, and nobody on the island knew what to make of it.

The keeper, Old Torquil, had kept a ledger of the tides for forty years. He showed her the page. Three marks ran down the margin in ink: a sun with rays like a comb, a crescent with its edges worked fine as lace, and a larger crescent below it, its hollow filled with the same patient pattern. A thin line joined them, and at the foot a small arrow pointed at the sea. He had copied them from a drawing nailed to the boathouse door, left by a traveller who sheltered there one winter and never came back for his boat.

Mairi asked why the moon was counted twice. Torquil said the sea does not care for our reckonings, only for the line that runs between the light and the drowned. So on the thirteenth night she climbed the tower with the compass and the oil, and set the lamp burning while the sun still hung red over Harris. The lace moon rose and the great moon rose beneath it, and the arrow of light swung out across the black water exactly where the boat had gone down. A fishing boat with two lanterns turned toward it, slow and sure, and came home.
