Single line spiral tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black outline forms a open spiral, with a smaller curl at its centre. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The image is in greyscale, with the tattoo centred and a plastic sheet softly lit in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ilse had been told the spiral was the only thing on the hull that never needed repainting, because the pen that drew it never lifted. Forty years of drydock sealant later, the old plotting drones still carried its shape on their casings, a single line that began at the outer ring and wound inward until it reached a curl no bigger than a thumbnail.

She was the last person aboard who could still run the plotter by hand. The ship's navigation had gone to the mesh decades ago, but the mesh failed in the third ring during the long dark, and somebody had to chart the wall of the hydroponic bay from memory. Ilse knelt on the grating with a stylus and a sheet of conductive foil, and she did not lift the stylus once. Her mother had taught her that a break in the line was a break in the record, and a broken record would mean walking the whole ring again, past the sealed hatches where nobody went now.

The inner curl was the hard part. Her hand wanted to close it into a dot, the way the old maps did, but she kept the arc open and let it breathe, a small hook where the line folded back on itself and turned for home. When she finished, the foil showed the same spiral as the hull, the same unbroken path that had been drawn to guide the first crew down the corridor, and the bay lights came up one panel at a time, following it.

She sat back on her heels and pressed her palm over the mark until the warmth of it reached her wrist. Somewhere below, the water pumps picked up their rhythm, and she wrote the date beside the curl, the way her mother had, and went to find something to eat.
