The left photograph shows a colour sun with flame-like rays in orange and yellow, with the words Live by the sun in black script below it. The right photograph shows a black and grey crescent moon with soft shading, a feather hanging from it on a cord, and dangling beaded strands, with Love by the moon in script above. Both tattoos sit on the inner forearm and are shown in close, evenly lit crops.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mirren remembered the bell only after the sun had slipped behind the salt marsh, and by then the fishing boats were out past the sandbar with no light to steer by. Her grandmother had kept the tower at Caldera Reach for forty winters, and every evening she had hung the copper lamp in the window and rung the bell three times. Mirren had only ever watched. Now she took the rope in both hands and pulled until her palms burned.

The bell rang thin and useless over the water. Mirren climbed the stairs two at a time, past the sun-glass her grandmother polished each dawn, past the narrow window that faced the moon's side of the sky, until she reached the lamp. Someone had tied a feather to its handle with a length of blue cord, and small beads clacked against the brass when she touched it. The feather was grey, the kind a gull sheds in autumn. She did not stop to wonder who had put it there. She struck the flint.
The lamp caught. Out on the water a small light answered, then another, and she counted them in as they came home across the dark.
When her grandmother climbed up at last, breathing hard, she found Mirren asleep on the stone floor with the feather still in her fist. She turned it over once, said nothing, and hung it back on the handle where it belonged.
