Ada wanted facts: the lens turned on clockwork, the weights needed winding every four hours, and the keeper's log had to be signed in ink, not pencil.

On the Tuesday of the autumn gales, the weight cable snapped at ten past three. Nell was alone in the gallery with her torch and a spare length of wire, her fingers numb. She knew the clockwork better than the stars. She wound it by hand, counting turns the way Dad had taught her, until the great glass began to turn again and the beam swept out over the black water.

Ada came up the spiral stairs at dawn with two mugs of tea and found her asleep against the rail. The log lay open. Under the last entry, in Nell's careful pencil, someone had written: Light held. Ada took the pen and, for once, did not argue. She signed it in ink.
