Sun and moon tattoos on two forearms

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A sun with a face and a crescent moon with a face are tattooed side by side, each with a dotted chain and a gemstone pendant hanging below. The sun has orange and yellow rays, a dotted border and warm shading, while the moon has teal shading, purple four-point stars and droplet details. Bold black outlines define both designs against the pale skin, and the two tattoos mirror each other in size and placement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had come down on Saltergate market since before dawn, and the sun arrived late, shaking water from her hair and dragging a wet shawl across the stall where her sister was already laying out the pendants. The moon did not look up. She had sold nothing all week, and the silver chains she strung for shoppers had gone dull at the links.

"You could have come sooner," said the moon. "The droplets have been running off the table all morning."

The sun said nothing. She reached under the cloth for the blue stone the old glassblower had given them in payment for a winter's mending, and she held it up to the grey light. The stone caught what little brightness there was and threw it back in a thin cold thread across the puddles. A boy with a barrow stopped to look, then a woman with a basket, then a man who had lost his wedding ring in Tuesday's flood and wanted something to make his luck feel less like weather.

Each of them bought a chain, and each paid in coppers that were really the sisters' own light, folded small. By dusk the stall was empty and the rain had stopped, and the moon finally turned her pale face toward the sun. "They wanted a piece of what we keep for ourselves," she said. "So we gave them some to carry home."

The sun laughed, and the sound was warm enough to steam the cobbles. They packed the stones away together, one gold and one green, and hung the last two chains on a nail under the awning, where the lamps came on one by one and the final drops fell from the links, each one catching a little of both.
