Sun and moon forearm tattoos with dotted chains
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A pair of forearm tattoos shows a sun with a face and wavy rays on the left arm and a crescent moon with a face on the right. Both designs use fine black linework with stippled shading and dotted chains hanging beneath them, with small red accents at the tips of the drops. The composition places the two motifs side by side, mirroring each other across the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The wind has had the roof off Carrick Hollow for forty winters, but the two faces on the north wall still look across the empty chapel at each other. My grandmother said Tobias Wren carved them as a wedding gift for the lord's daughter: a sun with rays like a struck lamp on one side of the arch, and on the other a crescent moon with a sly mouth and half-closed eyes.

Wren hung strings of pierced beads beneath both, and pressed drops of red ochre into the tips, because the lord's daughter, Isobel, said the stone looked too cold without a little blood in it. The wedding never happened. The lord sent Wren north over a debt, Isobel married a wool merchant from Kendal, and the castle came down around the two faces one slate at a time.
I climbed up on Midsummer Eve with a lantern and a tin of ochre I had no business carrying. The drops on the sun were fresh, though nobody had lived within ten miles of the place for a generation. I stood on the broken stair with my hand on the cold chain and understood that the sun had been kept clean all this while, scraped and tended, while the moon's face wore away in the rain.
I set the lantern in the gap between them. For a moment the light fell on both faces at once, the sun on the moon's side and the moon on the sun's, and the chains swung out and touched in the middle of the wall. Then the wind took the flame, and I let it go, because it had been waiting far longer than I had.
