Crescent moon and sun on forearms
Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms are shown side by side. The left arm carries a blue crescent moon with a face, shaded softly in blue tones, while the right arm carries a yellow and orange sun with a face and long wavy rays outlined in black. Fine dotted geometric lines surround both designs, and the close, well lit photograph shows the colour and detail clearly.

Sit down by the wall, where the stone holds the heat, and mind the wasps in the windfalls. You asked me last year about the sun and the moon, and I told you only half of it. Listen to the rest.

Old Mrs Tullis kept the orchard at Carrow Bottom, forty trees of Blenheim and Bramley, and she counted the fruit with a stick of blue chalk. Every evening she climbed the ladder to the top rung and marked a dot on the wall for each apple she reckoned would make it to picking. The sun came up over the hedge and set the fruit blushing. The moon came up over the far field and kept watch so nothing got stolen. They were brother and sister, so the tale goes, and they had agreed to share the orchard by the hour, the sun taking the day and the moon the night, and neither allowed to step into the other's shift.
One August the sun grew greedy. He lingered past his hour, stretching his long wavy rays across the grass until the apples swelled and split, and the dots on the wall ran down into a smear of blue. The moon rose pale and found the orchard half ruined. She didn't shout. She took the chalk from the ladder and drew a fine ring of dots around every tree, joining them with thin lines, so the sun could see plainly where his hours ended.
The sun looked at that circle for a long while, and for the first time in his life he went down early. Next morning there was dew on every dot, the windfalls had been gathered, and nobody has seen those lines since, except on wet mornings when they shine across the grass like a spider's work.
