Back of a woman's neck showing a small black outline animal tattoo at the nape, with an orange sun and a green snowflake further down the upper back.

Sun, snowflake and animal outline on upper back

Neck · Mixed · Photo

A woman with her hair in a loose bun is seen from behind, showing three tattoos. A small black outline of an animal sits at the nape of the neck, above an orange sun with a yellow centre and a green snowflake shape lower on the upper back. The background is softly blurred, which keeps the focus on the tattoos against the skin.

Dear Ada,

The thaw came on Tuesday, and I nearly missed it. For nineteen days the sun had shown itself only as a grey smear behind the ridge, and I had stopped looking up. Then Mrs Pirie came up the track on foot, shouting that the postman's sledge had got through. There was a parcel from your mother with two jars of marmalade and a wool hat that I'm told you knitted yourself, though it has eleven dropped stitches and a lean to the left.

The hut is quiet now that the guests have gone down. Only Pirie's dog and the stove keep me company. Last night a fox came to the step and sat in the snow, watching the lamp in the window the way you used to watch the kettle. I left the door open a crack, and it went off with something in its mouth, leaving tracks across the yard like a line of loose stitches. I thought of the tin of pins on your mother's table and the star you cross-stitched at Christmas, the one with the wonky points you swore were on purpose.

I've been keeping Harold's old logbook again. Every morning he drew the weather as a little symbol in the margin: a sun for clear, a flake for snow, a curled animal for the fox that came to his door. I found his entry for the first thaw of 1961. It says only, "Sun back. Ice still holding. Keep the lamp lit." I copied it under today's date, then drew the sun a little crooked, the way you'd do it.

I'll leave the book open on the table for when you come up in March. Bring the wonky star. I want to hang it by the window where the fox can see it.
