Sun and moon face on a foot

Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A sun with a human face and a crescent moon overlapping its centre sits on the top of a foot. The fine outlines are shaded with grey to give the rays and face some depth. The tattoo is black and grey, set against pale skin and a dark grey background.

The sign-in table in the function room of the Crescent Hotel had run out of pens by quarter past seven, so Joanne spent the first ten minutes of the reunion borrowing a biro from a man in a navy blazer who turned out to be Gary Pell, who had once set fire to the chemistry lab bins. She wrote her name badly, then looked up and saw Priya across the room, holding a glass of white wine in both hands like a hot water bottle.

They had been the two who sat at the back of Mr Haskett's geography lesson drawing suns in the margins of their exercise books. Priya always drew the sun with the face, and Joanne always gave the moon its crescent, tucked behind so the two of them shared one profile, one cheerful and one sly. Haskett called it vandalism and kept the books. Twenty-six years on, neither of them had told the other that those drawings were the only thing from school either had kept.

Priya crossed the room without saying hello and pulled a folded sheet of squared paper from her handbag. The corners had gone soft as cloth. "I found it in my mum's loft," she said. "Your handwriting's on the back. Dated the week you left for Leeds." Joanne turned it over. Beneath a list of bus times, in pencil, someone had written: Meet me when the sun goes down. The moon will be bored enough to listen by then.

Joanne laughed until the man in the blazer looked over. "I was so smug," she said. "I thought I'd invented being bored." Priya pressed the paper into her hand. "Stay for the carvery. We can sit at the back." Later, when the car park lamps came on one by one, neither of them checked a watch.
