Sun with dotted arc on the abdomen

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A sun with wavy, tapered rays surrounds a shaded central disc that has a textured, crater-like surface. Below it, a fine dotted arc with small hanging droplets frames the lower half of the design. The work is rendered in black and grey with soft shading and stippled detail, photographed against a dark background with the subject's midriff cropped out of frame.

You are nineteen the summer the master's hands start to shake, so the water-clock in the courtyard of the Serapeum becomes yours to keep. Each dawn you fill the bronze bowl from the cistern, check the float, and wait for the first gold edge of sun to clear the lighthouse roofs. The old man says the instrument has no opinion about you. It only counts.

The sun-disc above the lip of the vessel is a copper mirror, pitted by years of salt air, and when the light strikes it the pits throw small moons across the wall. Beneath it a thread of water falls drop by drop from the spout, and each drop that lands in the basin is an hour pressed into the ground. You learn to count them without looking, the way your mother counted stitches.

On the ninth morning of the month the float sticks. You feel the bowl lurch and see the level climb faster than it should, and understand that a hairline crack has opened in the clay spout. You have a moment to decide. You could tap the spout and mend it, losing the count, or you could let the hours run wrong and tell the priests the truth. You press your thumb against the leak, and the water runs wild over your knuckles, cold as a river in spring.

By the time the bells ring the sun is well up, and the disc has thrown its moons across the courtyard without you. The old man comes out leaning on his stick, looks at the wet stones, then at your hand. He says nothing. He only reaches up and tips the bowl's last drop onto your wrist, as if it were the first drop of a new count.
