The sunflowers on Mirrin Head never faced the sea the way the postcards said they did. My grandmother planted them along the cliff path the year the ferry stopped running on Sundays, and she insisted they turned to follow the boats out past the reef, though I never once saw one do it. What I did see was the bees, thick as thumbprints, working the middles where the seeds ripened into a pattern so tight it looked drawn with a compass.

She taught me to count those rings with a bent hairpin when I was nine. Eight in the outer circle, thirteen in the next, and a hidden little wheel of teal-green at the very heart where the dye from the dyers' sheds on the far side of the bay had soaked into the soil.
