Sunflower trio on the ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three sunflowers, one at the top, one in the middle and one lower down, linked by green leaves and closed buds along a diagonal line. The petals use layered yellow and orange tones with soft shading, and the flower centres are brown with fine detail. The photo is taken from the side of a bare torso against a pink wall and a blue top, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

The rain has found the gap in the awning again, dripping onto the tins of tea and the crate of tangerines, and you are still trying to sell the last sunflowers before the lamps come on along Calder Lane. Three heads left in the galvanised bucket, one already going papery at its edges. You trim the stems on the slant with the bread knife, the way your mother taught you, and stand them in water that smells faintly of pennies.

A man in a wet anorak stops, looks at the bunch as if it were a question he cannot afford, and asks what you want for them. Thirty pence, you say, which is a lie, because the bucket was always going to lose money by Saturday. He counts coins from his palm and asks whether they will last until Sunday. You tell him sunflowers are stubborn. They keep turning toward whatever light they can find, even grey light, even the glow from the chip shop across the road, and if he puts them on a windowsill they will make the room look as though someone has forgiven it.
He goes off with the tallest one under his arm, and the other two stay in the water. You wheel the crate under the arch and count the day's takings in the cold, bread-knife fingers stiff. When you look back, the flower left in the bucket has bent its face toward the chip shop sign as it flickers on, pale yellow in the wet dark, as if it has decided that light is light and the day can still be sold.
