Watercolour sunflower on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower with a dark centre and loose yellow and orange petals sits on the outer thigh, with green leaves and stems trailing downward. The shading is soft and blended, with paint-like drips and washes that give a watercolour effect. Colour ink dominates the composition, and the denim shorts and a light top are visible at the top of the frame.

The sunflowers arrived at the barn two days late, bundled in wet newspaper, and Hedda Marsh counted them twice before she let herself swear. Forty-one stems for a wedding of a hundred and twelve, and the bride had chosen them for their colour, not their sense. "Yellow like a bruise going off," her mother had said, which Hedda decided to take as praise.

The rain came at four. Hedda had been asked to paint the signboard for the marquee that afternoon, a rough wash of the same ochre and burnt orange, and now the water ran down the board in long tongues, pulling pigment with it. Green bled into yellow. She stood in the lane with a sodden brush and watched the flower heads she had painted lose their edges, petals dissolving into the grass of the field.

Her brother Tom found her there, holding the board at an angle like a tray. He did not ask what was wrong. He took one end and tilted it, and together they let the wash run off the wood, leaving only a dark centre where the paint had dried thickest. "That's the bit people look at," he said. "Everything round it is just weather."

At the reception the guests turned the board toward the light and said how lovely it was, how loose and modern, how like a real painting. Hedda let them think she had meant it. The bride's father asked whether she could do one for his garden shed. She said she would think about it, drank a glass of the cheap fizz, and watched the last of the rain go out of the sky over the hedge.
