The subject is shown in a close crop of the upper body, with the model's chin, lips and a black choker visible against a plain grey backdrop.

The sunflowers along the Marrow lane had been planted by a widow named Edith Coyle, who said a field of faces would keep the crows off the apples. Nobody believed her, but the crows did stay away, and by the end of August the blooms stood taller than the orchard gate, every head turned the same way, toward the church tower where the bell rang at noon.

Her son Tom went up the lane every morning with a bucket of windfalls for the pigs. He was nine that summer and had a habit of counting things. He counted the seeds in one great head once, pressing his thumb into the dark disc until his nail ached, and got to four hundred and eleven before his mother called him in to supper. The next day he counted again and got a different number, and decided the flower had been growing in the night.
On the last Sunday of August a man came up the lane with a case of brushes and asked whether he could draw the largest one. Edith said the flower was not hers to sell, but the man only smiled and sat down in the stubble with his sketchbook, and when he left he had drawn every leaf, every curled petal, and a faint shadow of the stem that ran down the slope like a path. Tom kept the drawing folded in his shirt for years, and only later understood that the sunflowers had turned to watch the man work.
