Sunflower pencil sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed pencil drawing of a single sunflower seen from the front, with layered petals curling outwards around a dense, dark centre. The petals are shaded with fine hatched strokes that build from light grey at the edges to deep black near the heart of the flower. The plain pale background keeps the full flower the clear focus of the composition.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate road by four o'clock, and by six my mother had given up pretending the boiler would last the night. Eleven of us sat in the back parlour that January: a carrier, two nuns from Kendal, a surveyor who kept checking his phone for a signal that never came. I was nine and bored, so I took the pencil from the guest register and drew on the back of the tide tables.

The only thing I could draw was the sunflower painted on the wallpaper at the top of the stairs, faded to the colour of weak tea. I got the petals wrong three times. The surveyor leaned over my shoulder and said you have to start from the middle and work outwards, because the light hits the heart last. He took the pencil and shaded the centre so dark the paper shone, then gave it back and said that was where the seeds packed tightest, and a flower keeps its best things where it can hold on to them.
Nobody knew the old man in room four. He came down on the second night with an empty flask and asked if we had any seed, the kind for birds. My mother said the sparrows had finished the last of it in November. He went quiet, then unfolded a sheet from his coat: a sunflower head in the same heavy strokes, petals bursting outward like a firework. Underneath, in capitals, he had written FOR WHEN IT THAWS. He did not say who it was for.
The road opened on the third morning, ploughs grinding up from the valley. The old man had gone before anyone woke, leaving the flask on the hearth and his drawing tucked into my mother's register beside my wrong petals. I still have it. Every January I open that ledger and start from the middle, the way I was shown, and let the dark part go last.
