By the third week of August the sunflowers along the back wall of Seacrest Boarding House had outgrown the guttering, and every morning their great heads swung round like lodgers queuing for the bathroom. You had been told to water them twice a day. Your aunt Mabel had said so in the letter, along with the price of coal, the milkman's name and a warning about Mr Pryce in room four, who paid in pennies.

Mr Pryce was the one who noticed the stem. He came down to the yard in his braces with a cup of stewed tea, crouched by the tallest plant where the stalk had split the wall and wound itself around a rusted bicycle chain, and said, 'It's going somewhere. Look at that curl. Nothing that tidy grows by accident.'

The tendril had looped twice around the chain and kept going, unspooling along the drainpipe, over the coal bunker lid and out through the gate towards the promenade. You followed it with the watering can. By noon it had reached the sea wall, and the flower head, heavy as a dinner plate, had turned its back on the house to face the water.

That evening you stood at the window of room four with Mr Pryce's pennies in your apron pocket and watched the lowest leaf lift in the wind, pale side up, as if it were waving at the boats. You left the back gate open and let the green line run on.
