Sunflower and vine tattoo on upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower with shaded orange and yellow petals and a brown centre sits on the upper back, framed by green leaves and curling vine swirls. The petals and centre use soft gradients and dark shadowing to give depth, while the vines are drawn with fine, even black outlines. The photo is a close crop of the skin with a plain, slightly warm background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad's seed packet had been in the biscuit tin since the spring of the flood, and by August the sunflower had grown taller than the back bedroom window. I'm writing this at the kitchen table at two in the morning because the streetlight outside keeps flickering and I can't sleep with it doing that.

The vine came up the drainpipe first. Mrs Okonedo next door said it would bring the slates down, but nobody had the heart to cut it. Its tendrils wound round the gutter bracket in tight little spirals, the way the iron railings on Clemence Street curl at their tops, and every morning there were new ones, greener than the day before.

Last Thursday the head finally opened. You'd have laughed: it had turned itself to face the bus shelter, as if it was waiting for someone to get off. I sat on the yard wall with a flask and watched the petals go from brown-gold to the colour of marmalade as the sun came up over the chimneys.

I'm leaving the heads on the wall until the seeds dry out. Dad would have wanted them kept for next year, and I want to see whether it comes back to this same wall, facing the same bus shelter, as if it had made up its mind.
