Colour realism tattoo of a sunflower on the upper arm, with green foliage and a pink bloom below it.

Realistic sunflower tattoo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower with golden-yellow petals and a dark brown centre is tattooed on the upper arm, shown in side view. Soft shading and fine detail on the petals and seed head give it a photographic, three-dimensional look. Green leaves and a partly visible pink flower continue down the arm, set against a blurred red and grey background.

Dear Wenna,

The sunflowers along the Harrow road have finally finished their turning, and the royal surveyor has stopped sending men out with scythes. You will not believe what the clerk told me at the gate. For three summers the Crown ordered every bloom in the valley cut, because they faced the sun, and His Majesty had decided the sun ought to face the palace instead. Nobody dared say that a flower cannot be taught manners.

So the field lay flattened for a month, and the crows came down to the stubble. Then the rain came, and on the third morning of it I walked out with my basket and found one head still standing. Just one, at the very edge by the ditch, its petals gone the colour of old brass. It had turned all the way round in the night and was looking east, toward the hills and the road to your door.

I cut the seeds from it with my thumbnail, the way Mother taught us, and I have sewn them into a linen bag for you. Plant them where the sun comes up first. Do not tell anyone at the palace.

The stalk was still warm when I broke it. I do not know how a thing keeps its face to the sun after the sun has been taken away, but I think it is the same as us, and I think you will understand what I mean when you open the bag.

Love, Ilse
