Sunflower tattoo on the side of the ribs
Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower with orange and yellow petals fills the frame, its dark brown-grey centre finely stippled. The stem curves down into two green leaves, all outlined in heavy black linework. The bright colour sits against the lighter skin of the side torso, with the composition running diagonally from the top right to the bottom left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit yourself down by the window, love, where you can see the front. Mind the cat. Now, the summer Mrs Pargeter let the top floor of Sandpiper House to the Dunning brothers, there were sunflowers up the back wall as tall as a man, and every one of them turned its face to follow the sun across the bay. You could set your watch by them. Nobody thought the Dunnings were anything but dull men from Bristol until the younger one came down to breakfast with his collar buttoned wrong and asked for seed.

Mrs Pargeter had a rule about the back garden, which was that nothing grew there she hadn't planted herself, and she'd sown those seeds in March from a paper packet she kept in her apron since her husband died. Walter Dunning had been asking after them since July. He wanted one head to take home to his mother, he said, though he couldn't see how a bloom would survive the train without looking foolish. So each evening he went out with a penknife and cut one stalk, and each evening the next one in the row had leaned a little further towards the water, as if it knew what was coming.
On the last night of August the storm came in off the Channel, and in the morning the whole row lay flat in the mud, every head pointing at the wall. Walter stood at the window in his dressing gown and said nothing. Mrs Pargeter said they'd stand again by noon, they always did, but he went out anyway, knelt in the wet and held the heaviest one up with both hands until its stem remembered the sky.
And that's why the Dunnings never went back to Bristol. Walter stayed on as gardener, and every summer after, the sunflowers went up that wall facing the sea. Mind your tea now. It's gone cold, same as the story.
