Sunflower and vines on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower with yellow petals, a brown centre and green leaves, surrounded by curling green vines and swirls. The petals and centre are shaded with soft gradients to give depth, while the vines use fine, clean linework. The design wraps around the forearm and is shown as three vertical strips side by side.

Ilse had been told the sunflowers would be pulled by dusk, so she went up the south terrace before the bells with a sack of wet clay and a knife she was not supposed to own. The steward of Veyl had decreed that nothing in the royal gardens should face the sun more boldly than the king did, and the great yellow heads along the wall had done exactly that for forty summers. Ilse knelt in the bed where the vines ran over the stones like green ink spreading on wet paper, and began to dig.

Her grandmother had taught her that the vines were the slow part. A sunflower could be raised in a season, but the curling tendrils that carried it up the trellis took years to learn the shape of a wall, and they never forgot it. So Ilse did not cut the stems. She cut the cords the steward's men had tied, one by one, and wound each freed tendril back into a loose spiral, the way a fern unfurls in shade, then pressed the seed heads into the clay she had carried up in the sack.
The guards came at the bell. Captain Morrow stood at the end of the bed with his hand on his sword and looked at the flowers, not at her, for a long moment. Then he looked west, where the sun was sinking behind the river, and he sat down heavily on the wall. 'They'll be gold by morning,' he said. 'Pull the rest if you like. I'll tell the steward I found nothing but weeds.'
By dawn the heads had turned, as they always did, to follow the light across the palace roof. Ilse watched from the kitchen window while the sunflowers swung slowly east, yellow and unbowed, and the vines drew their long green lines up the stone like a signature nobody had asked her to sign.
