Osric the tinker's boy wanted to shout for the porter. Hild, the ferryman's girl, said the porter was deaf in one ear and drunk in the other, and that shouting only woke the ravens in the keep.

So they sat on the wet steps under the broken arch and scratched marks into the stone with a nail. Osric cut a shield with a point at its foot and a hollow in its middle, a plain thing that he said would hold a man's weight. Hild cut a looping sign beside it, three bands woven together like a rope wrapped round a wrist and let go. They argued about whose mark was stronger until the water reached the second step and neither of them wanted to be the first to move.

The porter found them at dawn, asleep against each other with their hands pressed flat on the stone. He saw the two marks and, being a practical man, drew a line of chalk across the threshold: the shield on one side, the looping sign on the other. The gate opened for anyone who came carrying both.

Years later the castle was a ruin of roofless rooms and nettles, but the marks were still there, worn to a shallow groove. Children who dared each other across the courtyard always touched both before they ran, and nobody in the village could say when they had started doing it.
