Paper boat and paper plane on matching wrists
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two matching tattoos sit on the inner wrists, one showing a paper boat and the other a paper plane, each drawn in thin, even black linework. A dashed trail with small loops runs from each design, with a red dashed loop on the left wrist and black dashes on the right. The plain light background keeps the focus on the two designs, which are shown side by side.

The snow has sealed the lane since Tuesday, and the innkeeper's daughter has run out of string, so you fold the spare pages from the ledger instead. You learned it from your mother's letters, the way she'd crease a sheet into a boat and float it down the gutter outside the Crown at Hexley when the rain came off the moors. Your brother only ever made planes. He launched them from the top of the stairs until they glided over the bar and the landlord swore at them.

Tonight the fire spits and the guests have gone up. You set the boat and the plane side by side on the sill and draw their routes in pencil, a dashed line from each, looping back on itself wherever you hesitated. The boat wants the river. The plane wants the ridge, where the village lights come on at four. Neither route is sensible, and that seems to be the point of them.
In the morning a van idles at the gate with its wipers stiff with ice, and the driver offers you a lift down to the coast. You open the window an inch first. The plane goes out nose down into the white, then the boat, which catches the draught, turns once in the air and is gone. You pull on your coat and take the road, now ploughed, and leave the pencil loops on the sill for the innkeeper's daughter to find.
