Nested triangles on both forearms
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the inner forearms of two arms, held out with open palms toward the camera, against a wooden floor. Each forearm carries a bold solid-black triangle outline: the left is a single triangle pointing up with a thin white line inset within its border, and the right is a set of nested triangles pointing down. The image is in greyscale, so the crisp linework and solid black fill stand out against the skin.

The chart said the valley had no bottom, so Mabel Crewe ruled one anyway. She pinned the sheet to the hut table with two tin mugs and a flat stone from the beck, then drew the first triangle with her father's brass set-square, its point toward the sky, the way the ridge stood when you looked up from Garside.

Her brother Tom wanted the second one pointing down, into the dale, where the mill race ran under the bridge and the water had been taking the lower fields a yard a year since the flood. "Down is where the trouble is," he said, and laid his hand flat beside hers on the paper to show her where the baseline sat. She didn't argue. She inked the inner line thin, leaving a hair's width of bare paper so the millers could see where the stone ought to go, then closed the outer border solid so nobody could mistake a boundary for a rumour.
The millers came up on the Tuesday with a cart and a grievance. They stood in the wet grass with their caps in their fists and watched her sight along the ridge, then along the race, then back again, until the two shapes lined up over the field like a pair of gates left open. They walled the old channel where the thin white line ran, and the next spring the beck went around the field instead of through it.
Tom kept the chart above the hearth afterwards. The bare paper line had gone the colour of weak tea, and anyone who didn't know the valley would have said the drawing was just two triangles, one standing up and one hanging down, facing each other across a gap that held nothing at all.
