Black and grey realism back tattoo showing a pale child with yellow eyes holding a box, flanked by a masked rabbit figure and a wolf, with the word Korn above.

Surreal child and animals on a back piece

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large back tattoo shows a child with yellow eyes and dark lips holding a small box at the centre. A rabbit-like figure in a mask stands to the left, a wolf-like animal sits to the right, and the word Korn is written across the top above a cloudy sky. The work is rendered in black and grey with smooth shading, and the composition fills the whole back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the lamp, the lot of you, and stop fidgeting, because I'll tell this once before the whistle. Hollin Pit, the winter the rabbit came up the shaft. Not a rabbit, mind. A thing wearing one the way a magistrate wears his good coat. Long grey ears, a face like a cracked plate, and a waistcoat buttoned to the throat. It walked out of the dark on two legs and tipped its head at our lamps as if it had been expected for tea.

Behind it came a boy, no older than the youngest of you, with eyes gone the yellow of old candle wax and a tin box clutched to his chest in both hands. The lads wanted to take it off him. Old Tobias Reeve, who had already buried two sons, put his arm out and said no. You don't snatch what a child carries down a pit. You ask what's inside.

Something lay down at the edge of the light then, a long-jawed beast with its belly on the cold stone, watching the boy the way a dog watches a door. Tobias knelt and asked. The boy said nothing, only lifted the lid. Inside was a brass key, warm as a hand, and a folded paper with a column of names. Every man who had gone below Hollin and never come back up. The last name had been left blank.

Tobias took the pencil from his breast pocket and wrote his own name there. The beast got up and walked off into the black. The boy's eyes went pale, and he was just a boy asking for his mam. They carried him up in the cage that morning, and Tobias went up behind with the box under his arm. He never went back down. Some say the blank line is still waiting, and that it fills itself every time somebody pretends not to hear the knocking.
