Veiled woman holding a baby, black and grey sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a veiled woman bowing her head over a baby she holds, set against a radiating sunburst at the top. Below, ornate scrollwork and a bearded male face fill the lower part of the sleeve. The shading is soft and smooth, with fine gradients that give the figures a sculptural, carved-stone quality, and the image is shown in three repeated views of the same arm.

Mind the step, it's older than my grandmother and twice as stubborn. Now, the stone. Everyone in Sallow Cross will tell you Tobias Rendell carved the Lady over the north door of St Aldric's, but Tobias could not carve a loaf of bread. What he could do was hold a chisel so lightly that the marble forgot it was marble. He worked for three winters with the lamp guttering beside him, and the drapery he cut came from a veil his wife Mae had worn the day they married, folded in a drawer and pulled out only for him.

The baby was the baker's girl, Ada, who fell asleep on the mason's bench every afternoon while her father kneaded dough across the lane. Tobias said a child that still is sleeping is the hardest thing in the world to get right, so he sat her there and let her dream while he chased the curve of her cheek. The bearded face at the foot of the panel was his own father, a hard man who had told him the boy would never make a living with his hands. Tobias carved him looking up, pleading, the way a man looks at a door he has shut himself.
When the scaffold came down, the vicar climbed up with a lantern and asked for the old man to be turned to face the front, where the congregation could see him. Tobias said no. He said the old man had been looking up for forty years and could at least look down now at the woman and the child. The vicar grumbled and let it stand.
So when you two stand at that altar this afternoon, look for the sunburst. Tobias cut its rays deep enough to catch the light from the east window, and at the hour of the vows the shadows fall across the stone so the baby's hands seem to glow. Keep your eyes on the little hands, and you will see what he meant.
