Surrender script across a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with the word surrender written in black cursive script across one finger. The lettering uses thin, connected strokes with slight variation in weight and a soft, even black ink. The finger fills the frame against a blurred, mottled green background, with the tattoo sitting centrally and clearly legible.

Your father would not sign the boundary paper. He sat at the kitchen table with his reading glasses pushed up on his forehead, tapping the deed with the back of a biro, and said the wall had been his grandfather's and would stay his grandfather's until the day they carried him out through it. You watched the fire settle. Somewhere a dog barked at nothing, twice, then stopped.
Three days later you wrote the word on the back of the feed invoice in capitals, then crossed it out and wrote it again in the joined hand the schoolmistress had drilled into you, each letter touching the next so the whole thing ran like a fence line. You left it under the teapot. Nobody mentioned it at supper, but the paper was gone by morning, folded small and tucked behind the clock.
In March the wall came down by agreement, stone by stone, and your father stood at the gap with his hands in his coat pockets while the lorry reversed towards him. He said nothing about the word. He just lifted the clock off the mantel and looked at the back of it for a long time.
