Infinity symbol with names on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black script tattoo of an infinity symbol sits on the outer side of a foot, with the word amy written in the left loop and andrew in the right. The lines are thin and even, with a slight variation in weight along the curves. The skin is bright and glossy under the light, and the foot rests on a pale blue cloth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ribbon-weaver Hesketh had been asked for a knot that could not be undone, and she spent the damp month of Sallow arguing with the request. The king's surveyor wanted a marker for the Mirror Bridge, a band of figured silk that two people could tie to the rail and be bound by. Hesketh refused him the word forever. Nothing in Ysmarre lasted longer than a dye lot, she said, and she would not sell a lie in good thread.

Her apprentice, a boy called Piers with blue ink to the elbows, brought her the old pattern book instead. On one yellowed page someone had drawn a figure of eight lying on its side, the lines inked so carefully that the weight swelled and thinned along each curve. Beneath it was written a single line: loops, not knots, so you can always find where you came in. Hesketh pulled the page toward the lamp and began to thread two names through the two rings, one in each loop, where the silk would cross at the waist and go on passing each other forever.

The surveyor came back in the rains and turned the finished band over in his palms. He searched for a join and found none, only a thin dark line that grew heavier where Hesketh had drawn the thread tight. It has no beginning, he said, and so it cannot be given. It can only be worn, she answered, and let him keep it.

He tied it to the bridge rail that same week, and the river mist beaded on it every morning until the silk went soft and grey. Years later Piers, grown broad and nearly as stubborn as his teacher, walked the bridge at dusk and found the cross where the two names met by touch alone, his thumb following the curve back to where it had started.
