Dear Tom,

The gale took two of the shutters off the chandlery on Tuesday, and Mr Heskett has been up his ladder ever since with a tin of red enamel and a temper to match. You'll laugh, but he has taken it into his head to paint a ribbon on the lifebuoy board outside the lifeboat house. It's the shape the church ladies stitch on their cardigans, a loop folding back on itself, and across the middle he has written SURVIVOR in a curling black hand, the same hand he used for the fish prices before the till went electric.

Mother called it vanity. Mrs Penhallow called it a kindness and went and stood under it with her arms folded for a good ten minutes, which is how I knew she meant it. Nobody asked him to. He came down at six this morning with his brushes and the pot of black, and by the time the fish lorry rattled along the quay the paint was dry and the letters were sharp at the edges. The gulls have already tried the ribbon for crumbs. Mr Heskett says they can read it, which is why he drew the line so clear.

What I keep thinking about is the rope. Father's boat came in last night through the harbour mouth with the wind still behind her, and the first thing he did when the warp went over the bollard was look up at that board. He didn't say anything. He just touched the brim of his cap to it, the way you would to someone across a busy street.

I've tied a length of red wool to the gate of the net loft so you'll know which way to come. Walk in along the wall and watch for it snapping in the wind.

Your loving sister, Ada
