Swallow and rose on the side of the body

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A swallow in flight is outlined in black and filled with a realistic pink rose, with its wings and tail split into dark green and teal faceted panels. The rose has soft blended petals and smooth shading, while the geometric facets give the bird a stylised, layered look. The tattoo sits on pale skin against black clothing, with the image cropped closely around the design.

Mother said the swallows would leave the orchard by Michaelmas, so Hanne counted them every evening from the wall above the lower terrace. Forty-one on the Tuesday. Thirty-eight on the Thursday. The birds gathered on the telegraph wire beside the old pear trees and talked to one another in a sound like a thumb drawn along a comb.

Her brother had grafted a red rose onto the quince the spring before, against everyone's advice, and it had taken. By August it climbed the wall in a tangle and the bees went mad for it. Hanne told him the swallows would never nest near anything so showy. He said birds were not fussy about manners, only about mud.

On the last evening before the cold, a swallow came down from the rafters of the press house with a rose petal caught in its tail feathers, pink as a fresh cut. It landed on the sill, turned its head once, and dropped the petal into her palm. Then it was over the hedge, and the others went after it in a long dark stitch across the sky.

Hanne kept the petal in her prayer book until the following summer, when it had gone brown and thin as onion skin. Her brother said that was the rose's own business. She said a swallow only brings back what it means to come home to, and the orchard was still there to come home to.
