We pulled into the field behind Hatherleigh on Tuesday and there was a cherry tree in the corner by the gate, bare as a coat hanger on Monday and then gone pink overnight, as if someone had been up in the dark painting it. Dad says it's the same tree we parked under the year you broke your wrist, though I think he says that about every tree with a bit of shade. Mum has the caravan door propped open so the petals can blow in, and she keeps sweeping them out again.

The Wheel is still threatening to come apart at the hinge, and Mr Okafor from the waltzer says he'll look at it when the blossom goes over, which means never. This morning I took a flask down to the stile and watched the lads from the next pitch try to pull a branch down for a girl who wouldn't stop asking for one. They got a bough full of buds and a strip of bark. She carried the buds home in a jam jar and sulked for an hour because nothing had opened yet.

What I keep coming back to is how the flowers look wet even when they're dry, the pink fading to white at the edges and deepening where they sit closest to the stamens, as if someone had rubbed the colour in with a thumb. I tried drawing one on the back of a ticket stub and it looked like a bruise. Yours will look better. Come and see it before we move on Sunday.
