Swallow carrying a heart envelope

Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo

A swallow in flight holds an orange envelope marked with a pink heart in its beak, with green leaves and a curling vine beneath it and small dots scattered around. The bold black outlines define the bird, with the wings filled in teal, orange and pink and the body in black with a pink throat. The tattoo sits on smooth skin above the waistband of dark denim.

First a strand of blue wool from the knitting basket, then a bent hairpin, then the corner of a bus ticket. I thought nothing of it until the morning a pale orange envelope lay on my sill, sealed with a pink heart drawn in biro, and no name on the front.

I kept it for a week before I opened it. Inside was a single line in a looping hand that wasn't mine, asking whether the tide would be low enough for the rocks at Sandmouth on Thursday. I knew the handwriting belonged to Tom, the lodger in number six, who had been trying to pluck up courage since Easter and who had clearly decided a bird was less embarrassing than a porch conversation.

I went to the rocks on Thursday with two sandwiches wrapped in greaseproof paper. He was already there, sitting on the wet green weed with his shoes beside him, and he looked more frightened of the swallow than of me. We watched it dip over the water with a scrap of something in its beak, the little dots of spray catching the light around it. When I asked where it was taking the post, Tom said the bird had its own round to run, and he wasn't about to stop it.
