Swallow carrying a heart key

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A line drawing of a swallow in flight with wings raised and a long, forked tail trailing behind. The swallow holds an ornate key with a heart-shaped bow in its beak. The bold, even outlines and simple feather strokes are drawn in blue pencil on a pale blue mottled background, with the subject placed centrally and angled diagonally.

Dear Tomasz, the swallow came back to the petrol station on Tuesday, the same one that nested in the sign over the pumps last summer. I thought it had gone south for good. It perched on the rim of the ice machine and looked at me as though I owed it money, then it lifted off with something bright in its beak. I swear it was the brass key from the cabin at the far end of the motel, the one with a heart worked into the bow that nobody ever found a lock for.

You remember how Dad used to say that cabin was waiting on a guest who'd arrive with the right story. Mrs Okafor from the diner wanted to call the council about the rent, and the lorry drivers said the place was cursed, which made Dad laugh so hard he had to sit down on the step. After the funeral I found the key in his coat pocket, wrapped in a bus ticket to Yuma from 1979. I never tried it. I kept meaning to.

The bird went west over the salt flats with the sun behind it, low enough that I could see the forked tail cutting the heat. I drove out after it as far as the cattle grid before I lost it against the mountains. When I got back, the cabin door was standing open a hand's width, the way Dad always left it when he meant to come back before dark.

I have not shut it since. Come and see for yourself, or tell me to send the key, and I will tie it to a string around the swallow's leg if I have to.
