Now sit close, because the stove is going out and I'll not get up for coal twice. Winter on the Halsey place, the year the beck froze solid to the gate, Amos Thorne found a swallow lying in the lee of the byre wall. It was stiff as a glove left out in the rain, and the snow had got into its feathers. He would have left it for the crows, only his daughter Nell saw it first and would not let him.

She carried it in her apron pocket to the range and wrapped it in a dishcloth. Everybody knows swallows don't stop for winter. They go south over the sea and come back to the same eaves in April. So the old folk said this one had lost its road. Nell wore a brass key on a string round her neck, the one for her grandmother's chest, which held nothing but letters. When the bird woke at dusk and snapped at her finger, she held the key against its beak to keep it from biting, and it took the key in its beak and would not let go.

Through the long dark it sat on the mantel clutching that key like a boiled sweet. In February the thaw came, and the bird stretched its forked tail, flew to the window and was gone, and the key dropped to the flags with a ring. Nell picked it up and said nothing. Amos swore the swallow would be back for it, that a bird never forgets a debt. He was a fool about most things, but he was right about that.

April came, and the first swallow in the yard went under the eaves with a sliver of something bright in its beak. Nell climbed the ladder to the rafters, reached into the mud nest, and found the key lying in the straw, polished as the day it was cut. She hung it back round her neck, and the swallow sat on the ridge and watched her do it, as if it had only ever been lending it.
