I was nineteen and paid by the hour to carry sealed messages between the districts, which meant a bicycle, a canvas satchel and one rule: never fly anything I could not catch. The swallows broke that rule every morning. A pair had nested under the eaves of the Greenwich relay hut, and the male would dive past my handlebars, wings swept back, forked tail snapping, as if he had a grudge against cyclists. Mum said he was only saying hello. Mum said a lot of things.

That day's slip was for a woman in Deptford, with no return address and a wax seal gone soft in my jacket. I rode through the flooded underpass with it held against my ribs. When I reached her door she broke the seal, read it once, and laughed out loud, a sound I had not heard from anyone in months.

"They're coming back," she said, tipping her head at the sky. I didn't ask who. Above us the swallows cut across the sodium light, sharp as stitches through grey cloth, and I understood that some things are only ever seen from below.
